book assignment

Book

Project Description:
Your book may be in the traditional form (covers front and back with pages), or using an alternative form (3-D, billboard, comic, for instance).
Your book must be entirely created or reconstructed by you (covers, inside pages, etc.).

In part 1 of Book, your ideas and images will take form in a mock-up of what will become a fully realized piece.
Every choice that you make in your book should relate to your subject matter (fonts, page layout, materials, sequence, cover, etc). Think about text as a visual and or physical part of the book.
Consider alternative material, physical or otherwise (x-games, trash, water)

Guidelines

1 Make a plan of action for creating your book:
1. In your visual journal sketch out your ideas for creating your book. Think about several ideas. Including different media and alternative book formats.
2. Make a list of all the materials (handmade paper, cloth, steel, bread, etc.) and resources that you think you will need (photolab, software, tools, shop techs wood shop, metal shop, fibers, etc.
3. make a storyboard of your book (for your own understanding). This storyboard should be a work of art in its own right and not a difficult to understand messy sketch.

2. Create a well-defined mock-up of your “book” that communicates your idea clearly to the viewer. Your mockup must have good craftsmanship (Use X-acto knives and straight edges, sharp markers, paper glue that does not wrinkle, high quality images or good Xerox copies—poor quality mockups will not be accepted). Your mockup does not have to be to scale but it does have to be accurate in proportion.

sustainability and art

more interesting art related to sustainability (from Corinne, my TA for my Monday class):

patrick dougherty, an amazing artist who makes work with sticks.

noimpactman
, a guy who lives in manhattan and doesn't take elevators, goes everywhere on foot or by bike, buys food only grown within a certain distance from the city, and gave up all paper products (including toilet paper) and writes a blog about it.

readymade
, a great magazine to look at in general, but in particular for this project.

call for videos

thought this might interest some of you:

down:2:earth video project
Explore sustainability through your own lens.
D2E invites students, activists, artists and everyone in between to submit original three-minute digital videos focused on themes of sustainable living and natural landscapes of New England. Your videos should be strongly visual and can explore any related theme, in any style: narrative, ambient, montage, animated, documentary or experimental. Entries can be visual diaries of natural places and how people use them or advocacy messages about environmentally sustainable ways of living. Video entries must follow the simple rules listed below and must be received by March 14, 2008 (details below). Selected entries will be presented on the main stage at D2E. The most compelling, effective and creative entries will be recognized at D2E during the opening ceremonies on Friday March 28.
• Show us your favorite natural landscapes in the New England area.
• Share outdoor activities that build a connection with nature.
• What is your environmental message?
• How do our lives interact with the natural world?
Note: Strong visual images are a striking way to tell your story, with or without sound. Show
us what you mean rather than telling us verbally.
Rules and guidelines:
– Videos must be three minutes or less.
– Submit your video in one of the common digital video file formats such as: .AVI (preferred for best quality), .MOV, .MPG, MPEG4 and .WMV.
– Use resolution settings appropriate for projecting videos rather than for playback on a mobile device.
– Videos must be received by Friday March 14, 2008 at the below address: Commonwealth Promotion, Inc.
715 Boylston Street - Boston MA - 02116
– Send us your video files on a CD or DVD. Remember to send us the files rather than an encoded DVD format so we can copy them for projection.
– Videos must not use copyrighted material without permission.
– Submitters must possess signed release forms for all persons appearing in their videos.
– D2E and its artistic advisors reserve the right to choose which videos will be presented and may reject entries for any reason, including relevance to sustainability themes, appropriateness to D2E, and effectiveness of the message.
D2E (down:2:earth), held March 28-30 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, is an exposition of companies who are responding to consumer wishes for more sustainable products that combine sustainability with style and innovation, as well as an education forum for learning about a greener lifestyle. www.d2eboston.com
